The 2014 Annual Convention of the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine held last April 6-7, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila had over 700 attendees. Emergency physicians, ED health managers, emergency care nurses and emergency medical technicians gathered for two days to discuss various topics relevant to practice of emergency medicine. Participants had the pleasure of attending any of the three simultaneous lecture sessions/tracks or simultaneous workshops on advanced airway management, lung ultrasound or the team case presentations.

As health care systems in the ASEAN region move towards integration and globalization, it is vital for clinical specialties like emergency medicine to define their role in the future Philippine health care system. This year’s annual convention theme focused on defining the various roles of emergency medicine specialists not only in the emergency department but also in pre-hospital care and disaster medicine.

Dr. Eligio Maghirang, PCEM President opened the convention while Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, Undersecretary of the Department of Health and one of the founding members of PCEM, discussed in his keynote address the lessons in the health sector response during the super typhoon Yolanda.

The Philippine Board of Emergency Medicine, led by Dr. Eric Macalintal, current chair, inducted fourteen (14) new diplomats. It is also the first time the college has inducted fellows, diplomats who have had two years of clinical practice in emergency medicine.

Sponsors’ booth also offered venues to introduce participants to the latest technology that could improve the practice of emergency medicine. But most importantly, the convention was filled with festive and vibrant spirit of camaraderie and treasured friendships among emergency medicine practitioners.
