The Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM), in partnership with WINFOCUS - Malaysia has conducted a 2-day basic course on Ultrasound Life Support last April 26-27 at the St. Luke’s Medical Center, QC. The PCEM Academics and Research Committee headed by Dr. Reynante Mirano facilitated the conduct of the course taught by the Malaysian team headed by Dr. Adi Osman, President, WINFOCUS - Malaysia. The course had 29 participants representing emergency physicians from various training and non-training institutions for emergency medicine.

At present, the use of bedside ultrasonography in the ED of tertiary hospitals in the Philippines is still in its infancy. Factors, such as availability of ultrasound machines in the ED and the lack of standard curriculum for EM specialists have contributed to the lack of utilization of bedside ultrasound by EM physicians. With the conduct of this course, PCEM hopes to improve the knowledge and awareness on the clinical utility of the bedside ultrasound during the critical decision-making that an EM physician must perform.

Participants had lectures and hand-on training on Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST), Rapid Ultrasound in Shock (RUSH) and Basic Lung Ultrasound in Emergency (BLUE).

The success of the course has strengthened the partnership of WINFOCUS – Malaysia and the College.
