To all PCEM Fellows and Diplomates


For the information of the majority, this coming PCEM 2013 convention is also election year for a new set of PCEM Officers or Board of Directors.  Filing of candidacy will start from Feb 1 until Feb 28, 2013 ONLY and the campaign period will be from March 1 - 31, 2013. Election day will be from April 14 until 12 noon of April 16, 2013. Proxy voting will be done one week BEFORE the convention for those unable to attend the convention because they will be on duty or out of the country.

ONLY Fellows in GOOD STANDING will be able to run for office and ONLY Fellows and Diplomates in GOOD STANDING will be able to vote. It was in early 2009 that the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine and Acute Care (PCEMAC) and the Philippine Society of Emergency Care Physicians (PSECP) began the process of merging into a single national specialty society for Emergency Medicine, with the encouragement and guidance of the Philippine Medical Association.

A Steering Committee was organized to work towards the merger of the PCEMAC and its members included: Dr. Alfie Acosta, Dr. Esteban Almeda, Dr. Rodel Capule, Dr. Richard Vincent Dimagiba, Dr. Minerva Laconico, Dr. Noel Lagman, Dr. April Llaneta, Dr. Faith Mesa-Gaerlan, Dr. Philip Ong and Dr. Arvin Samson. After several meetings, the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM) was born.

On January 17, 2011, PCEM received official notice of its recognition as a Specialty Society under the Specialty Division of Family Medicine from Dr. Alex Alip Jr., executive secretary of the Philippine Academy of Family Physician. VISION The national academic body composed of dedicated professional emergency medicine physicians oriented towards quality service; research and training in emergency care, working together towards global recognition.

Last June 19, 2011, the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM) and the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) have signed a memorandum of agreement to promote the Basic Evaluation and Training for Trauma and Emergency Response (BETTER).

As partners in trauma prevention, the two specialty societies planned to organize several training activities to enhance the capacities of doctores to manage trauma cases. Dr. Faith Joan Mesa-Gaerlan, PCEM Vice-President representing Dr. Noel Lagman, PCEM President and Dr. Josefina Almonte, the first female President of PCS gave their respective messages in support of this endeavour.

The signing held at the Philippine General Hospital was witnessed by the participants from 1st BETTER course organized by PCEM and PCS. Residents and graduates of emergency medicine who attended the course came from the training institutions of Makati Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital, Manila Doctors Hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, Daniel Mercado Medical Center, and De La Salle University Medical Center.

The 514-strong Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM), the just recently-accredited specialty society under the specialty division of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) held its first Annual Convention last April 11-12, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The annual meeting with the theme ìCommon Goals, Common Vision has gathered 506 participants among them emergency medicine specialists, family medicine physicians, general practitioners, ED directors, emergency care nurses and emergency medical technicians.

Dr. Oscar Tinio, President of the Philippine Medical Association, who graced this momentous occasion, congratulated the College for successfully uniting all emergency medicine specialists under one organization.

Dr. Noel V. Lagman, the first president of PCEM presided over the business meeting that followed the first day of lectures and practical workshops.

Dr. Carlos Vicente Gabriel was overall organizing committee chair for this year.
